Dirt!
Our first Science unit this year was about Dirt! We did quite a few cool experiments.
We discovered that not all soil is the same. Sand, loam, humus and clay are all parts of soil. Some hole more water than others. Some allow us to grow things better than others. We also learned about composting and started our role as the school composters. Check out some of the pictures!

Remind 101
Please sign up for Remind 101 to get important message and notifications. I do not wish to make the sign up accessible to anyone on the internet, so if you have misplaced your sign up information, please ask for another reminder in the agenda.
First Week Update
Well, we had a great start up to school. The Duck Run on Friday was a great way to end off the week. I am extremely proud of the grade three students for their participation and their behaviour on Friday- way to go! I hope this gained their interest in the sport of Cross Country running for the rest of the season.
A few things to note for this week:
A few things to note for this week:
- The office will NOT be accepting IOU's for hot lunch this year. You have two payment options. You can pre-pay for single or multiple coupons in the office OR you can send money with your child that morning. There will be NO hot lunches ordered after 9:30, so ensure your child has their money for the beginning of the day.
- Mrs. Kitchen will be away on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for a conference in Saskatoon on RTI. Mrs. Burback will be in substitute teaching.
- Those runners that signed up for the Cross Country season will be off to the Cherrydale Run for Peace on Tuesday. Note that students must attend practice Monday in order to race on Tuesday.
- We still have a few students without indoor shoes- please send these as soon as possible, as it is a Victoria School expectation that students wear indoor shoes at all times when in the school building.
- I expect that home reading and agendas are returned to school on a daily basis- we are doing well with this so far- KEEP IT UP GRADE THREE FAMILIES!

Victoria School Behaviour Matrix
Every student will have a copy of this pasted into their agenda. Please take a minute to review it with your child so that everyone is familiar with the expectations at Victoria School.
WELCOME Back
Welcome back everyone! I am looking forward to the start of the school year with the students tomorrow. I hope the goodie bag and poem is a welcome reminder to the students that school will be fun- they will learn lots and can count on me to help them along the way! Here is to a good year!
WELCOME
Welcome to your classroom!
Welcome to your classroom!
I am so glad
that you are here!
I have filled a
bag with goodies,
To help describe
our year.
The pencil
represents the learning
That each day
you will do.
The sharpener
will keep you ready,
When your pencil
is no longer new.
The eraser is to
let you know
That it’s ok to
make mistakes.
We will correct
them and learn from them,
No matter what
it takes!
The “Smarties”
show that I know you are smart,
And really
special too.
The “Lifesavers”
are a reminder,
That I am here
for you
The “Starbursts”
are to tell you
That you are a
star to me,
School can be
tough at times,
But also fun,
you’ll see.

Battleship
Today we met again with our friends from Saskatoon. We were playing battleship. At first, we thought we were going to lose! They sank more ships that we did in the beginning. But.... in the end we came back and won the game, sinking more ships then they did. We thought it was a lot of fun to play against these kids. We were surprised that we won the game! We also chatted with them on todaysmeet. We have really enjoyed getting to know the grade three class from Saskatoon.

Digital Farming
We just finished our first digital farming experience with a class from Saskatoon. When we started our Facetime call we didn't know where they were. They gave us five clues about where they were from and we had to research to figure it out. The clues we got were:
They live on the prairies.
They have a river going through their city.
They are a city.
They have an airport.
They shine.
We guessed they were from Sasaktoon and we were right!
We gave them the clues about Kamsack:
Our town is called the Garden of Saskatchewan.
Our population is over 1000 people.
We live close to a provincial park.
We have two First Nations reserves close to our town.
We live close to Manitoba border.
They needed a few more clues, so we told them:
Our mayor's name is Rod Gardner
Our towns name starts with a K and ends with a K.
We live about an hour from Yorkton.
We live about 3 hours from Regina.
Then they were able to figure out that we live in Kamsack!
We are going to be playing a game with them next week on the 12th! What a fun experience.

Garden Work Bee
Thanks to the overwhelming support of the school and community of Kamsack (over 60 volunteers) we had an amazing, successful work bee on June 1. Check out a couple of pictures of the progress made on the garden.

Wonders...
We have been working on asking deep thinking questions. We spent a morning outside looking at things critically with Magnifying glasses. The students then had to ask questions they were wondering about their chosen object.

Boats and Sleds
The pictures above are of the boats and sleds we created as a wrap up to our Magnet and Static Electricity Unit. The students had to create a boat or sled that they could move using one of the above non-contact forces.

Division
We have been working on the unit of division. We have used multiple ways to learn division (Grouping, Sharing, Repeated Subtraction and Relating it to Multiplication). We have been applying our knowledge through facts, problems and journals. Check out some pictures of our math wall, journals and problems.
We will be wrapping up our division unit with an assessment next week.

Garden
We are still waiting for the snow to melt so we can finsih the construction of our garden. We will be organizing a parent and student work bee when it does- we will keep you all posted. In the meantime, we continue to start plants indoors so they can be transplanted when the snow melts. Our tomates overgrew our greenhouse. We transplanted and staked them into icecream pails and put them in windows throughout the school so they continue to grow in sunlight.
We have now also started chives which have sprouted and are growing in the green house. We just started spinach, lettuce and basil in the greenhouse as well. A few have sprouted- probably when we get back from the weekend we will see lots of tiny plants.
Check out some pictures of our plants.

MAGNETS
We are learning about forces in Science. We have discussed Friction, Magnetism and Static Electricity. The main focus on the unit is Magnetism. We have done may experiments. At the start of the unit, the students got a chance to explore and play with the magnets.
